Iraq demands Security Council to condemn Turkey and withdraws its troops

(Iraqinews.com) Baghdad – Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari described on Saturday the entry of Turkish troops into Iraqi territory as a “dangerous violation of the sovereignty and the principles of international law,” stressing Iraq’s refusal of any military movements “to fight terrorism without the knowledge of the Iraqi authorities and its approval, calling the Security Council for the issuance of a resolution to condemn Turkish incursion and to demand  the withdrawal  of Turkish troops immediately.

Ibrahim Jaafari said in a speech at the Security Council session on the violation of Turkish forces of Iraqi sovereignty,”The Turkish troops are estimated at hundreds of Turkish soldiers with a number of armored vehicles, tanks, and guns. In December 3, 2015, they invaded 110 kilometers distance in the Iraqi territory, specifically the province of Nineveh without asking for official permission from the Iraqi federal authorities in a serious violation of Iraqi sovereignty and the principles of international law in accordance with Article #2 of the Charter of the United Nations.”

Jaafari added, “The statements made by Turkish officials to the media to justify violating the borders of a sovereign neighboring state are unacceptable. Those military movements are a hostile act that violates the international rules and laws,” pointing out that, “Iraq rejects any military movements in the fight against terrorism without the knowledge and the consent of the Iraqi authorities.”
