Iraq formally requests postponement of compensation payment to Kuwait for a year, says UN

(IraqiNews.com) On Wednesday, the United Nations announced that Iraq officially requested to postpone the payment of $4.6 billion of Gulf War reparations to Kuwait for a year, while noting that it will consider the formal request in a private session on Thursday.

An official in the United Nations said for IraqiNews.com, “Iraq, which suffers from oil prices drop and the war against ISIS, formally requested to postpone the payment of $4.6 billion in compensation to destroying oil installations in Kuwait during the 1990-1991 occupation.”

The official, who did not reveal his identity, added, “Kuwait and the major powers of the United Nations Compensation Commission will consider the formal request in a private session in Geneva on Thursday.”
