Iraq reserves on two paragraphs in law draft over Syria

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) Iraq reserved on two paragraphs in the law draft of the meeting of the Arab League over Syria.

A statement by the Foreign Ministry received by IraqiNews.com cited “The Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari in his participation in the meeting of the Arab League Council on the ministerial level during its extraordinary session on Monday regarding the draft law on the situation in Syria, reserved on the eighth and the tenth paragraphs.”

“The meeting of the Arab League Council discussed a group of resolutions related to; supporting Palestine’s request for membership as an observer state at the United Nations, the Israeli assault on the Yarmouk Factory in Khartoum, and the ongoing preparations for holding the Helsinki Conference in 2012,” the statement added, noting that “Zebari confirmed during the discussions Iraq’s position in support of Arab issues and countries.”

The statement pointed out “Regarding the draft law on the situation in Syria, Zebari welcomed the efforts made to unify the Syrian opposition in the eighth paragraph of the draft law, but he reserved on the rest of the paragraph because it contradicts with the efforts made by the Arab and UN envoy Lakhdar Brahimi.”

“He also reserved on the note in the tenth paragraph which contained a call on the Security Council to pass a resolution that demands an immediate end of fire under Chapter VII of the Charter. Zebari suggested changing this sentence into calling on the Security Council to take the responsibility to stop the violence, because the call for applying the provisions of Chapter VII allows military intervention at a time that Iraq supports any effort to find a peaceful solution to the crisis consistent with the mission of the Arab and UN envoy Lakhdar Brahimi that enjoys Arab, regional, and international support,” the statement concluded.
