Kobler welcomes completion of last major relocation convoy of MKO elements

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) The UN Secretary General’s Special Representative for Iraq, Martin Kobler, welcomed the news related to transporting the last major convoy of Mujahedeen-e-Khalq Organization elements from Camp Ashraf into Camp Hurriya.

A statement by UNAMI quoted Kobler as saying “This is an important step as we near the end of the relocation process. I would like to thank the residents for their cooperation,”

“I would also like to thank the Government of Iraq for ensuring this last major relocation and paving the way for the peaceful closure of Camp Ashraf under the terms of the memorandum of understanding,” the statement added.

In total, 680 residents moved in the convoy today.

“Of the 3,280 residents originally in Camp Ashraf, only a small group now remains on a temporary basis to arrange the details pursuant to the closure of the camp,” the statement continued.

“UN monitors will continue to oversee the process, including the relocation of remaining residents to Camp Hurriya,” the statement continued.

With the majority of residents now in Camp Hurriya, Mr. Kobler called for a renewed focus on resettlement.

“I urge the international community to speed up its efforts to accept residents in third countries,” the statement concluded.

On last Saturday night, the last part of Ashraf Camp residents was transferred from Diyala to Baghdad.
