Kurdistan’s parliament to discuss Christians’ situation

ARBIL / IraqiNews.com: Media adviser for Kurdistan’s regional parliament on Monday said that the Kurdish lawmakers, during a special session this coming Wednesday, will discuss Christians’ situation in Mosul, noting that a delegation will be sent to the city to take a closer look at this issue. “Wednesday’s special session will discuss the threats of killing and displacing that face Christians in Ninewa province,” Tareq Jawhar Sarmemy told IraqiNews.com. “The Parliament will also form a delegation to conduct a field visit to Mosul, to take a closer look at Christians’ situations there, and to relay their demands,” he said. Yesterday, the Iraqi Premier Nouri al-Maliki said that his government will take immediate measures to solve problems that Christians face in Mosul city, referring that he will order to provide protection to them, but without specifying when. On October 11, 2008, a media source from the Assyrian Democratic Movement said that notables of some neighborhoods in Mosul city expressed commitment to protect and defend Christians from any attacks, adding that five Christian families practically returned to the city. A day before that, a media source from the movement in Ninewa said that some 295 Christian families fled the city of Mosul during the past three days, while an Iraqi military source said that four Christians were killed in two separate attacks in Mosul, recording a rising wave of attacks against the religious minority in the northern volatile city.
