New general guide for Islamic Movement of Kurdistan

SULAIMANIYA / IraqiNews.com: The political bureau of the Islamic Movement of Kurdistan on Wednesday elected Mullah Sadiq Abdelaziz to replace Mullah Mohammed Omar, a movement official said on Wednesday. “During a meeting today, the political bureau has agreed on the return on Mullah Sadiq Abdelaziz and Kamal Rahim to the movement,” Kamil al-Hajji told IraqiNews.com news agency. In April 2000, Abdelaziz and Rahim defected from the movement and formed the Islamic Intifada Movement under the leadership of the first. The Islamic Movement of Kurdistan/Iraq was founded in 1980 by Shaykh Uthman Abdelaziz and several other Sunni mullahs who were all part of the non-political “Union of Religious Scholars” (Yaketi Mamostayani Ayni Islami). The party’s main support comes from in and around that town of Halabja. In the region controlled by the Islamic Movement in Kurdistan, the party established its own infrastructure but did not seek to apply Sharia law. SS (P) 1
