Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) Parliament Speaker Salim al-Jabouri urged the U.K. government to play a role in reconstructing Islamic State-liberated areas in Iraq.

“During a meeting with British Ambassador to Iraq Jon Wilks on Monday, Jabouri called on the international community to shoulder its responsibility towards the Iraqi people during this critical period,” Jabouri’s media office said in a statement, a copy of which was obtained by Baghdad Today website.

The two sides discussed means of boosting bilateral relations at all levels, as well as the latest security and political developments in Iraq and the Mideast region. The talks also focused on international efforts exerted to reconstruct areas recently liberated from Islamic State militants.

Furthermore, the two sides touched on measures taken to ensure a safe return of the displaced people to their home regions in Iraq.

“Efforts are underway to reconstruct the liberated areas and bring displaced families back home ahead of upcoming elections,” Jabouri said.

He also urged the U.K. and the international community to pump more investments into the Iraqi market in the coming period to help reconstruct IS-liberated areas as soon as possible.

Wilks, meanwhile, stressed his country’s continued support for Iraq at the security and economic levels and called for stepping up coordination between the two countries in the coming period.
