Speaker not necessarily from IAF – legal expert

BAGHDAD / IraqiNews.com: Attorney Tareq Harb on Monday said there is no legal or constitutional basis that limits the right to nominate a candidate for the position of parliament’s speaker to the Iraqi Accord Front (IAF) or to a specific sect. “Political blocs have the right to choose a figure from outside the IAF, provided that this figure gets 178 approval votes in the parliament,” Harb told IraqiNews.com. “It is acceptable to nominate a Sunni figure from outside the IAF,” he added.
