Kuwait rejects bilateral solutions to pending issues

BAGHDAD / IraqiNews.com: Kuwait has rejected an Iraqi request to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to bilaterally resolve contentious issues between the two countries. Kuwait’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Abdullah al-Murad, has stressed that all pending issues with Iraq with regards to “the Iraqi regime’s invasion and occupation of Kuwait in 1990 should remain in the hands of the Security Council,” the Kuwaiti al-Qabas newspaper said in its Saturday issue. According to the newspaper, Murad said that he will meet with the president of the Security Council on Tuesday to deliver him a message explaining Kuwait’s stance on the issue. Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari has sent a letter to the Security Council, saying that his government has adhered to its commitments contained in the Council’s resolutions relating to Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait. Zebari has explained that three issues remain outstanding, suggesting a bilateral cooperation between the governments of Iraq and Kuwait to resolve them. The issues include missing persons, the demarcation of the Iraq-Kuwait borders and war damages. SS (P) 1
