Kurdish president, IHEC delegation discuss elections law

Kurdistan-IHEC ARBIL / IraqiNews.com: President of the Kurdistan region, Massoud Barzani, discussed with a delegation from the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) of Iraq the elections law. “Barzani met with a delegation from the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) of Iraq in Salah el-Din resort on Wednesday April 8th, 2009 in the presence of Kurdistan region parliament’s speaker Adnan Mufti and the head of Kurdistan region’s presidential divan Dr. Fuad Hussein,” said an official statement posted on the Kurdistan Regional Government Kurdistan RegionG) website. “They discussed the issue of parliamentary elections in Kurdistan region,” it added. The delegation of Independent High Electoral Commission praised the elections law of Kurdistan region parliament and emphasized that the law is corresponding with the Iraqi constitution and the Iraqi elections law. The delegation mentioned that there are two problems facing the elections: The first one regarding the participation of Kurdistan region’s citizens that are living in other countries, where the delegation expressed its conviction these citizens find participation to be difficult. The second problem is regarding the financial side, which has not yet been solved. On his part, President Barzani decided to return this issue to Kurdistan’s parliament, where parliament has to cooperate with the Kurdistan regional government and the federal government to solve the problem, call for the elections, and assign their date.
