132,838 inmates released so far under Amnesty Law

BAGHDAD / IraqiNews.com: A total of 132,838 prisoners have been released thus far from jails under the general pardon law, according to an official spokesperson for the Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council. “The General Amnesty Law has covered 132,838 persons since it was first applied in February 2008,” Chief Justice Abdulsattar al-Birqadar told IraqiNews.com news agency. “Meanwhile, 32,657 other detainees were not included in the pardon,” he added. On February 13, 2008, the Iraqi Parliament endorsed a law granting amnesty to a large number of detainees in Iraqi jails. The law, however, did not include those convicted of genocide, mass killing, administrative and financial corruption, or terrorism charges. SS (P) 1
