Diala council resumes sessions after one week of suspension

DIALA / IraqiNews.com: Diala’s council on Tuesday resumed session after more than one week of suspension after the arrest of the head of the Accord bloc, the chairman of the Diala council said. “The Diala council resumed meetings on Tuesday (May 26) after one week of suspension following the arrest of the head of the Accord bloc, Abduljabar al-Khazraji, by Iraqi forces from Baghdad,” MP from the Kurdistan Alliance, Taleb Mohamed Hassan, told IraqiNews.com news agency. “All members agreed to leave no stone unturned to activate the committees’ role and supervise the governmental departments’ performance to fight the administrative,” he added. For his part, member of the al-Islah bloc, Sajed Abdul Ameer, told IraqiNews.com news agency “the council is facing several obstacles and difficulties which hindering its work, mainly the disagreement among political blocs inside the council.” The Diala provincial council decided during its meeting on Tuesday (May 19) to suspend meetings and activities until the release of the head of the Accord List in the council who was arrested on Monday (May 18) by a military force. A military force from Baghdad on Monday (May 18) raided the Diala council’s building and arrested the head of the Accord List, Abduljabar Ali Ibrahim al-Khazraji, known as Abu Mejahed, on charges of terrorism. The Accord List has the lion’s share of the Diala council as it has 9 seats out of the 29-seat council. Baaquba, the capital of Diala, is 57 km northeast of Baghdad. SH (S)/SR 1
