Death sentence for 4 convicts in Zewiya bank case

BAGHDAD / IraqiNews.com: The al-Rasafa criminal court has sentenced four convicts to death in Zewiya bank case, a spokesman for the Supreme Judicial Council said. “Al-Rasafa criminal court sentenced on Wednesday (Sept. 2) four convicted people to death in the case of robbing Al-Rafidain Bank- Zewiya branch in Baghdad,” Chief Justice Abdulsattar al-Birqadar told Iraqi News. “The court freed another suspect for lack of evidence against him,” he added. Unidentified gunmen stormed in the early morning of Tuesday (July 28) al-Rafidain bank, al-Ziwya branch, in al-Karada district, central Baghdad. The gunmen shot down eight Iraqi policemen and stole unidentified amount of money. On August 3, 2009, police forces said that five of the seven-member gang that robbed the Al-Rafidain Bank-Zewiya branch were arrested, while the two other robbers left are still at large. SH (P) 1
