Turkmen MP calls for using 2004 voters’ records in Kirkuk election

BAGHDAD / IraqiNews.com: A Turkmen lawmaker on Friday said the best solution for the problem of Kirkuk is to resort to the 2004 voters’ records and smart cards in the forthcoming Iraqi parliamentary election early next year. “The holding of elections in Kirkuk hinges on national accordance among the different groups in the province,” Fawzi Akram Tarzi told IraqiNews.com news agency. He pointed out that the rigging that occurred in the records in 2005 has made it hard to hold more elections in Kirkuk. Tarzi noted that this rigging was acknowledged by Iraq’s Independent Higher Electoral Commission (IHEC). The oil-rich Kirkuk, a disputed city of mixed Turkmen, Arab and Kurdish population, lies 250 km northeast of the Iraqi capital Baghdad. AmR (P) 1
