KA says will use presidential veto against proposals to postpone polls

BAGHDAD / IraqiNews.com: The Kurdistan Alliance (KA) on Tuesday threatened to use the presidential veto against any proposal to put off the election in Kirkuk province. “We will walk out of the parliamentary session if a proposal to extend the life of the current parliament is put forward,” a KA lawmaker, Mohsin Saadoon, told IraqiNews.com news agency. Article 56 of the constitution stipulates that parliamentary elections should be held 45 days before the life of the outgoing parliament expires, Saadoon noted. Throughout the past week, the Iraqi Parliament has failed to pass the elections bill due to differences over the status of the oil-rich city of Kirkuk in the law on parliamentary elections, scheduled to be held on January 16, 2010.
