3rd stage of Karbala river walling starts

KARBALA / IraqiNews.com: The foundation stone for the third stage of a project to wall al-Husseiniya river in Karbala, involving 1800 meters of the total length of the 27-km-long river, according to the governor on Saturday. “The river, which feeds Karbala and al-Husseiniya district, (20 km) north of the city, will be walled for a length of 1800 meters at a cost of 2.5 billion Iraqi dinars in a bid to lessen wasted water resources,” Amal al-Din al-Hirr told IraqiNews.com news agency. The project is undertaken by the Iraqi water resources ministry’s irrigation and canal projects organization, he said. The governor noted that the project is expected to involve the use of 20,000 cubic meters of dust for purification and 60,000 cubic meters of dust for burial and walling of 18,000 meters with cement. The project’s second stage was inaugurated a few days ago and envisaged works for a length of 1,750 meters and at a cost of 2.500 billion dinars. The first stage, launched on February 28, 2010, involved works for a length of 1,200 meters at a cost of 850 million dinars. Karbala lies 110 km southwest of the Iraqi capital Baghdad. AmR (S) 1
