BAGHDAD / IraqiNews.com: The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for Iraq (SRSG), Ad Melkert, said on Monday that Iraq‘s progress towards an irreversible democratic system of governance can not be derailed after the recent political blocs agreement, according to an official statement of his office. “On the occasion of the Muslim Eid ul-Idha and on behalf of the United Nations in Iraq, I would like to extend my best wishes to the people and Government of Iraq,” SRSG said in the statement received by IraqiNews.com news agency. “The recent significant breakthrough in the Government formation process confirms us in our belief that with the commitment of the country’s leaders to the principles of dialogue and partnership, Iraq‘s progress towards an irreversible democratic system of governance can not be derailed.” “I am encouraged by the ongoing efforts by all Iraqi parties to move forward with the government formation process. I call on them to redouble their efforts and work together to ensure timely completion of the formation of a fully representative and inclusive government that can effectively address the needs of the people.” “I would like to reiterate the United Nations‘ commitment to continuing its assistance to the Government and people of Iraq in their efforts to achieve sustainable stability, security and development for the country and its people,” Melkert said.
