Melkert’s visit to aimed at normalizing conditions – official

KIRKUK / IraqiNews.com: The Chairman of the Iraqi Parliament’s Commission to implement article 140 of the Constitution, Raid Fahmy, has said that the visit of UN Secretary-General’s Representative in Iraq, Ad Melkert, to Kirkuk “is part of the efforts aimed at helping different political forces in the city to restore security and stability, on the eve of the U.S. forces withdrawal from the city.” “Kirkuk has witnessed tension and clashes over the past period. It is facing worries that its different parties will not be able to achieve stability and security, on the eve of the withdrawal of the U.S. troops, particularly due to the tension witnessed in the city among different parties,” Fahmy told IraqiNews.com news agency. Fahmy said he “believes that the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), is trying through its Chief’s visit for Kirkuk to concentrate on the issue of elections, through the achievement of normal circumstances in Kirkuk.”   SKH (TI)/SR 515
