Nearly 12000 detainees in Iraq

BAGHDAD / IraqiNews.com: The head of the Higher Legislative Council Judge Midhat al-Mahmoud said today that the number of the detainees in Iraq is no more than 12000, pointing out that the death penalty issued in the first half of 2011 for terrorist cases reached to 291 verdicts. He pointed out that the court approved 283 death verdicts in 2010, which were then sent to the presidency for final authentication. In a press conference held in Baghdad, attended by IraqiNews.com, he added that the remaining verdicts shall be approved by the middle of next August, 2011. He pointed out that the costs of lawyers for defending the accused reached 1.5 billion Iraqi dinars in 2010. RM (TP)/SR 742
