Abbawi explains Government’s stance towards Camp Ashraf for French officials

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) The Foreign Ministry Undersecretary, Labid Abbawi, met Secretary General of the French Foreign Ministry.

A statement by The Ministry of Foreign Affairs received by IraqiNews.com cited “The meeting tackled many topics; first of which were the mission of the delegation, headed by the Undersecretary, that focuses on explaining the Iraqi Government’s position towards the Camp Ashraf case and the means it is adopting, in cooperation with the UN, to solve the case under the international human rights standards.”

“The meeting also touched upon joint cooperation between the two countries. The French official expressed his country’s desire to promote bilateral ties through exchanged visits of officials from both countries on the highest levels,” the statement added.

“The two sides also reviewed the status quo in the Middle East and means to address the crises there in the way that guarantees the security and safety of the region,” the statement concluded.

Earlier, the Iraqi Government transferred portions of the MKO elements to the Liberty Camp in Baghdad.

A statement by the UN, received by Iraqi News cited “The United Nations and the Iraqi Government on 25 December signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the voluntary relocation of several thousand Iranian exiles living in Camp New Iraq, previously known as Camp Ashraf, in the north-eastern part of the country.”

On 31 January, the UN High Commissioner for Refugee, UNHCR, and the human rights office of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq, UNAMI, confirmed that “The infrastructure and facilities at the new relocation camp met international standards.”

Mr. Ban acknowledged “The efforts of the Iraqi Government to prepare the temporary transit location to host the residents and allow UNHCR to undertake refugee status determination.”

MKO is classified as a terrorist group according to the USA standards, but the EU decided to relief the Organization from such classification.
