 British Police release 2 Iraqis suspected of smuggling Saddam’s statue

<p>Follow-up (IraqiNews.com) The British police assured that it “has released two men who were arrested on suspicions of illegally importing a piece of the statue of the former Iraqi <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>President Saddam Hussein</strong> without directing charges for them.”</p>
<p><strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>Derbyshire British County</strong> police said that “They opened an investigation after a complaint from the Iraqi government through its ambassador in London on suspicions of stealing part of the head of a statue of the former President.”</p>
<p>A spokesman for the British police said that “Investigation showed evidence to question the authenticity of the piece which has not recovered despite the time and efforts of the police elements on this case,” noting that “So, the two men were released on bail and we informed the Iraqi embassy about that.”</p>
<p>He added “It’s a pity that the police and other sources have made a long time investigations on the grounds that this piece is a real.”</p>
<p>The two men [67 and 52 years old] were arrested on last January 2012, arguing that one of them had violated Section VIII of the Iraqi sanctions.</p>
<p>The statue of the former <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>President Saddam Hussein</strong> which was toppled in Firdaus Square in Baghdad on April 2003 after the entry of the U.S. troops to <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>Iraq</strong> and the British police suspected that it was put up for auction in [Derby], central England, but has not been sold.</p>
<p>According to the British law, any person who possesses property for Iraqi culture must hand it over to the police.</p>
