Financial reasons behind closing British Consulate in Basra

Basra (IraqiNews.com) The British Embassy in Iraq clarified that “Financial rather than security reasons are behind the closure of the British Consulate in Basra.”

The British Deputy Ambassador to Iraq Walber Deen said in a press conference attended by the reporter of IraqiNews.com on Friday “The reasons behind closing the British Consulate in Basra was for financial reasons,” noting that “The location of the Consulate is expected to be at the center of Basra province.”

“Inaugurating the Consulate in Basra aims to expand relations and extend cooperation on different sectors, including economic sector,” he added.

The British (BBC) radio station mentioned on Tuesday that “London intends to close its Consulate in Basra province completely, but the British Foreign Ministry will keep an office for representation in the province without a permanent staff there.”
