Kurdish opposition to nominate for Kurdistan Region Presidency in next elections

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) The Kurdistani opposition (the Kurdistani Islamic Union, Islamic Group, and Taghyeer Movement) stressed that “It will present a nominee for the post of Kurdistan Region President during the upcoming elections planned in next September.”

Chief of the national relations for the Tagheer Movement, Tawfiq Raheem said that “The Kurdish opposition will participate in the next elections of Kurdistan Region through presenting a nominee for the position of Kurdistan President,” pointing out that “the opposition sides are discussing naming a nominee for this post.”

The nomination of the current President of Kurdistan, Masoud Barzani for third term aroused different reactions among the political forces of the Region.

The position in Kurdistan Region see that Barzani has completed two successive presidential terms, therefore he has no right to nominate for third term according to the Region Presidency Law while others believe that Barzani was elected once through Kurdistan parliament and the he was elected for the second time through referendum, so he has the right to nominate for new term since Kurdistan Presidency Law adopts the referendum.
