IHEC expects Elections of Kurdistan Region to be postponed

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) The Independent High Electoral Commission announced that there is a problem within the special law of the elections of Kurdistan Region that might postpone the elections.

The head of the IHEC, Sarbast Mustafa, stated in a press conference on Wednesday “The request of the Kurdistani Regional Government states that the elections need to be held on the 21st of June 2013,” assuring that “There are some problems within the elections law that are not fixed yet which makes it difficult to hold the elections on time.”

“The request is being discussed and there is an article about the voting of the minorities which is not included in our application and this problem can be fixed either by canceling this article or suspending it,” he added.

“The period for registering the political parties will be extended till next Thursday,” he pointed out, noting that “12 political parties are approved and 18 others are being under discussion.”

Regarding the nomination of the president post of Kurdistan Region, he said “The time limit of the nomination for the president post is not determined yet and there terms and conditions will be revealed where every eligible person can nominate for this post.”
