US Embassy welcomes holding COM meeting in Erbil

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) The Embassy of the United States in Baghdad welcomed the meeting of the Iraqi Council of Ministers in Erbil, noting that “This meeting proves that the Iraqi leaders are committed to strengthening the State and isolate the terrorists.”

The President of the Kurdistan Region Masoud Barzani and the Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has announced reaching an agreement to activate the joint committees between Baghdad and Erbil to resolve problems and outstanding issues between Baghdad and the Region.

The US Embassy said in a statement today, received by Iraqi News (IraqiNews.com) that, “We welcome holding the meeting of the Iraqi cabinet and associated meetings on Sunday in Erbil, including the meeting between PM Nouri al-Maliki and President of the Kurdistan RegionG Masoud Barzani, which came after the meeting of the unity hosted by head of the Supreme Iraqi Islamic Council Ammar al-Hakim, and the other signal indicates that Iraqi leaders are committed to strengthening the State under the Iraqi constitution, and isolate terrorists and criminal groups that seek to sow sectarian strife.”

The statement added “We look forward to holding the elections in Anbar and Nineveh in the coming weeks and resume the meetings of the Iraqi parliament to address pending legislations after the surge of violence last month conducted by the armed groups including al-Qaeda in Iraq.”

The embassy noted “We are encouraged to see a clear commitment by the Iraqi political leaders to build a unified, federal and democratic Iraq.”

“The United States will heavily participate with the Iraqi government and the people who serve this government to promote our mutual interests, according to items of the Strategic Framework Agreement, including the commitment to the principles of democracy according to the Iraqi constitution,” the statement concluded.
