UN – Military action in Iraq must accompany a political solution

(IraqiNews.com) On Thursday, Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq, Nikolay Mladenov said that the military operations launched by the Iraqi Security Forces against ISIL must be accompanied by a political and social agreement which addresses the underlying problems of all communities.

Mladenov said in a press statement that “part of the problem caused by the organization of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant in Iraq. It must be addressed militarily,” noting that “the success of the operation depends on three factors, the first is the cooperation between Baghdad and Erbil.”

Mladenov emphasized the need to “regional and international participation, saying that we should not leave Iraq alone in solving this crisis, which affects not only Iraq, but it is characterized by wide regional ramifications.”
