Iraq faces North Korea in final of AFC U-14

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) Iraq and DPR Korea look set to provide a fitting climax to the AFC U-14 Championship when the two sides meet in Wednesday’s final at the Hajibabaei Stadium.

Iraq pulled off a sensational 3-2 win over hosts Iran on Monday to qualify for the final, while DPR Korea had to rely on goalkeeper Kim Kum-song’s heroics to send rivals Korea Republic home early.

Both sides garnered seven points from the group stages and topped their respective tables. Iraq defeated Korea Republic and Thailand, but drew with Tajikistan en route to the final four, while DPR Korea defeated Iran and Saudi Arabia but were held by Timor-Leste.

“Both sides have a good chance to win the final,” declared DPR Korea coach Kim Chol-jin.

“We must prepare ourselves properly and we must be ready to play against any opponent. Some of our players are still fresh, and I am sure if they play like they did against Korea Republic, we will win this title.

“All of my players work to support the team. We have always emphasised the teamwork in my team,” he added.

While Iraq also advocate teamwork, two of their players have been standout performers – the tournament’s leading goalscorer Mohanad Ali Kadhim and dead-ball specialist Mohammed Radhi. The duo have scored seven goals between them in the competition so far.

“Radhi is brilliant with his feet. He can score amazing goals. The area from where he converted two free-kicks in the Iran match is his territory. He has already scored something like 20 to 30 goals in training from that position,” said Iraq coach Saad Hashim.

“I have every confidence in Mohanad (Ali Kadhim) as well. He is tall, he makes good moves, and his eyes are always on the goal.

“One thing is clear, the final is going to be played between the two best sides in the competition, of that there is no doubt.

“We don’t want pressure to spoil our performance, so we will be playing free flowing and attacking football, and we will see what happens.” /End/
