Assyrians call Iran to provide security in Iraq

(IraqiNews.com) A senior Iranian official said on Thursday, that the Assyrians called on his country to provide security for them in Iraq, saying that his country has become a “pioneer” in countering terrorism.

The official news agency of Iran ‘Erna’ quoted Secretary-General of the Supreme Council for National Security, Ali Shamkhani as saying, “The Assyrians representative called on Iran to provide training and weapons to help ensure the security of Assyrians in Iraq.”

Shamkhani added, “It shows that the assistance of the Islamic Republic is not limited to a certain group or belief. When it comes to fighting terrorism, Iran is a leader.”

It is noteworthy that the Assyrian community, which is one of the oldest Christian communities in the world, is under growing threat from the ISIS group in Iraq and Syria.
