Anbar (Iraqinews.com) – Iraqi border guards killed on Monday two members of Islamic State (IS) group while attempting to infiltrate into Al-Qa’im district in Anbar coming from Syria, a security source was quoted as saying.

“Security forces managed to kill the two men as they were trying to sneak from Syrian territories into the desert of Al-Qa’im in western Anbar,” the source told Iraqi news website Basnews.

The source, who preferred to be unnamed, explained that the “troops intensified their security presence along the borderline with Syria starting from Ar-Rutbah town to Al-Qa’im district” to face any terrorist threat by Islamic State.

The terrorist IS group still has noticeable presence in different parts of Abu Kamal city and Hajin cities on the country’s borders with Syria, the source concluded.

Violence in the country has surged further with the emergence of Islamic State extremist militants who proclaimed an “Islamic Caliphate” in Iraq and Syria in 2014.

The surge in violence between armed groups and government forces has resulted in over five million internally displaced persons across Iraq and left more than 11 million in need of humanitarian assistance, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
