Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Mass grave containing human remains of Islamic State leaders has been found, northwest of Mosul, a security source from Nineveh police said on Monday.

Speaking to BasNews website, Col. Thamer Khedr said “security forces ran into a mass grave containing human remains of ten bodies of Islamic State members.”

The members, according to Thamer, were killed by the militant group likely due to their reluctance during liberation battles, northwest of Mosul.

A mass grave, with human remains of women and children, was found, north of Mosul, Col. Zyad Iyad, of Nineveh Operations Command, was quoted saying on Sunday.

On Friday, a mass grave, composed of human remains of 23 Islamic State leaders, was found, south of Mosul.
Thousands of Islamic State militants as well as Iraqi civilians were killed since the government campaign, backed by paramilitary troops and the coalition was launched in October 2016.

In December, the Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi announced gaining control on all the territories that were captured by Islamic State, since 2014.

Islamic State continues to launch sporadic attacks across Iraq against troops. Security reports indicate that the militant group still poses threat against stability in the country. The group still has dormant cells, through which it carries out attacks, across Iraq like it used to do before 2014.
