Salahuddin (IraqiNews.com) – Five Iraqis, including three schoolboys, were wounded Sunday in a car bomb blast near a school in al-Shirqat district in Salahuddin, a police commander said.

“A booby-trapped vehicle went off near al-Shirqat primary school, leaving three pupils and two security men wounded,” the province’s police chief colonel Majid al-Ghatran told Mawazin news website.

Surveillance cameras have shown a masked man wearing a military uniform and parking his car near the school’s gates, he said, adding that after about an hour and a half, the car exploded, causing severe damage to the school’s façade.

Violence in the country has surged further with the emergence of Islamic State extremist militants who proclaimed an “Islamic Caliphate” in Iraq and Syria in 2014.

The surge in violence between armed groups and government forces has resulted in over five million internally displaced persons across Iraq and left more than 11 million in need of humanitarian assistance, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

Violence left 174 Iraqis dead and wounded throughout the month of October, the United Nations said early Friday as the country struggles to recover from four years of Islamic State militancy.
