Iraqi makes miniature models of traditional wooden ships

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The traditional wooden ships attracted the interest of the Iraqi man, Asaad Suleiman Daoud, who worked on making miniature models of them, arousing the admiration of many people inside and outside Iraq in other Arab countries.
In his small workshop in the southern Iraqi city of Basra, Daoud makes small models of large old wooden ships.
Daoud uses the old wood of doors and windows, which is the best kind of wood previously used to build old ships, and sometimes he buys new wood.
The sizes of ships he builds range from twenty centimeters to three meters, and prices start from ten USD and reach two thousand USD.
“I started since I was a child, I love wood, I work on wood and I carve small models. Not only wood, sometimes I work on clay and on stone… In 2010, I worked on my first ship model, and I continue building small ships,” Daoud explained.
“The wood I currently use is the Burmese wood. It is one of the finest wood, and it is the same wood used in ship building,” Daoud stated.
Daoud added that in addition to Burmese wood, he uses wood of old doors and window frames that are no longer used from his friends and from the market because the old wood has become rare.
