Electrical interconnection with Jordan to be completed in 3 months

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Minister of Electricity, Ziyad Ali Fadel, set on Wednesday the date for the completion of the electrical interconnection with Jordan and then Egypt, according to a statement cited by the Iraqi News Agency (INA).
Fadel confirmed that a plan to add more than 11,000 megawatts to the national grid in the coming period will contribute to the stability of the energy system.
The Iraqi Electricity Minister explained that he held a meeting with the Egyptian Minister of Electricity during his recent visit to Egypt and discussed several areas related to the energy sector.
“85 percent of the electrical interconnecting project with Jordan has been completed,” Fadel said.
“We expect the electrical interconnection line to be ready and to start supplying Iraq with electric power from Jordan within 3 months,” the Iraqi Minister of Electricity elaborated.
Fadel illustrated that the second stage of the electricity project will be between Egypt and Jordan; thus, all three countries will be electrically interconnected in one network.
The Iraqi Minister of Electricity clarified that the ministry had prepared a plan to produce 11,500 megawatts during the next phase.
Iraq produces about 23,000 megawatts of electricity, while the country needs about 35,000 megawatts to secure electric power around the clock.
