Iraqi Parliament urges government to remove foreign forces from Iraq

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament, Mohsen Al-Mandalawi, denounced the continued attacks on Iraq, particularly the US attacks on the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) and its leaders.
Al-Mandalawi said on Saturday that the government must abide by the 2020 parliamentary vote mandating the withdrawal of foreign forces from Iraq, according to the Iraqi News Agency (INA).
The Speaker of Parliament pointed out that Iraqi security capabilities have advanced and that there are no new agreements requiring foreign forces to stay in Iraq.
The request, signed by more than 100 Iraqi lawmakers, was referred to the legal and security parliamentary committees. It includes a proposal to remove foreign forces from Iraq.
Al-Mandalawi highlighted the need to take the necessary diplomatic measures that protect Iraq’s sovereignty, security, and stability.
A few days ago, US President Joe Biden stated that the recent US strikes that targeted multiple locations in Syria and Iraq were a reaction to attacks against US soldiers at a military base in Jordan. Meanwhile, the Iraqi government declared that 16 people—including civilians—had been killed and 25 others injured in the US strikes.
The Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, said that the government’s insistence on ending the international coalition’s mission in Iraq comes after the Iraqi forces have acquired advanced capabilities in combating terrorism.
