Wassit-Projects WASSIT / IraqiNews.com: The roads and bridges department on Tuesday implemented six rural roads within projects to develop provinces in 2008 at a total cost of 1.5 billion Iraqi dinars, a local source said. “Works started in these projects last March in al-Bashaer, al-Muwafaqiya, al-Shahimiya, al-Dabouni and al-Ahrar districts,” the source told IraqiNews.com. The roads and bridges department had announced last month the implementation of 19 rural roads with a total cost of 3.240 billion Iraqi dinars. A Shiite province, Wassit, 180 km south of Baghdad, is in the east of the country. Its name comes from the Arabic word meaning “middle,” as it lies along the Tigris about midway between Baghdad and Basra. Its major cities include the capital, al-Kut, and al-Hayy. Prior to 1976 it was known as Kut Province. SH (P)/SR 1
