Works underway to dig fresh oil well near Amara

MISSAN / IraqiNews.com: Technicians and engineers of the Missan Oil Company embarked on Sunday on works to dig a new oil well east of al-Amara city, the company’s information director said. “The well is being dug in al-Halfaya oilfield, (40 km) east of Amara,” Ali Abbas Sadeq told IraqiNews.com news agency. Al-Halfaya field comprises three wells with a combined production capacity of 40,000 barrels per day (bpd) out of Missan’s total production of 110,000 bpd. “The project is part of a new plan by the company to maximize production of oil. There are other plans to dig 10 new wells in al-Halfaya between 2009 and 2010,” said Sadeq. He noted that Halfaya, one of the richest oil wells in the country, has untapped oil resources estimated at 6 billion barrels. There are six producer oilfields in Missan – al-Bazrakan, Abu Gharb, al-Fakka, al-Halfaya and al-Amara in addition to the Majnoon field, which is shared with the South Oil Company. Also in Missan there are five explored non-producer wells: al-Huwayza, al-Rafie, Rafidain al-Sharqi, al-Dujaila and Kemit. Amara, the capital city of Missan province, lies 390 km south of Baghdad.
