UNSG’s Representative in Iraq calls for improvement of workers conditions
BAGHDAD / IraqiNews.com: The UN Secretary General’s Special Representative in Iraq , Ad Melkert, has called for the improvement of the workers conditions in Iraq , in order to achieve a prosperous and free economy in the country. “We want to see the Iraqi economy achieve prosperity in serving the Iraqi people and to act on some necessary issues and reforms, through Iraq’s activity to improve the workers conditions, putting an end for unemployment and Iraq’s entrance in the world market,” Melkert said in a speech in the Conference of Iraqi Economic Partnership, held in the Parliament building on Tuesday. Melkert said that “such issues need some constitutional reforms, for which we had presented 5 recommendations, including the decrease of unemployment in Iraq to the least possible level, granting full freedom for workers and laying down of laws to protect them, along with the achievement of good working opportunities for them, as well as the achievement of social justice in the labor and equal opportunities.” The UN Official also called on the Iraqi government to “act according to the said recommendations, including the liquidation of the administrative corruption and laying down proper laws to serve the Iraqi citizens, thing that will help to create a good environment to establish a free Iraqi market.” The works of the Conference of Partnership among Economists, Social and Government Activists, had began early on Tuesday, under chairmanship of Iraq’s Parliament Speaker, Usama al-Nujeify, UNSC’s Representative in Iraq, Ad Melkert, and participation by several Iraqi and Arab Economists and Businessmen.
