Syrian President Bashar al-Assad during a meeting with Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari 

Damascus (IraqiNews.com) – Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Monday attributed recent victories achieved in combating terrorism in Syria and Iraq to mutual cooperation between the two countries as well as sacrifices of Iraqi and Syrian heroes.

According to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), President Assad made the remarks Monday during a meeting with Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari and the accompanying delegation in Damascus.

The meeting discussed the latest developments in Syria and Iraq, as well as issues of mutual concern at the regional and international levels.

During the meeting, President Assad stressed the importance of upgrading and consolidating the Syrian-Iraqi historic relations particularly at the two peoples’ level.

He stressed that recent victories over terrorism in Iraq and Syria would not be achieved without high-level coordination between the two countries.

For his part, Jaafari pointed out that the regional and international circumstances are changing positively towards what is going on in Syria and Iraq due to the legitimacy of the cause defended by the two brotherly countries”.

Al-Jaafari considered that Syria possesses a cultural and historical heritage and having approached triumph over terrorism, it will have a role in the region more than any stage before.

The two sides also agreed on intensifying efforts for re-opening the border crossings between the two countries in a way that contributes to broadening prospects of cooperation between them.
