Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Iraq has vowed to take a strong action to deter any party from undermining its sovereignty following Sunday’s drone attack on its border with Syria.

In a press statement, the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that it is ready to take all required diplomatic and legal measures to confront any act violating the country’s sovereignty or affecting its security.

It added that it will consult with the UN Security Council, as well as friendly countries on that score.

A drone attack against Iraqi paramilitary Popular Mobilization Forces was blamed on Israel, escalating tensions across the Middle East following similar attacks in Lebanon and Syria.

The attack is believed to be part of Israel’s efforts to curb the Iranian influence in the Middle East region and support U.S. troops in Iraq.

The Israeli military claimed responsibility only for a series of airstrikes carried out near the Syrian capital Damascus, saying that they were mainly meant to foil an imminent large-scale attack by Iranian forces and Shiite militia in northern Israel.

Israeli foreign press spokesman Jonathan Conricus told CNN the army assessed the threat to be “imminent, as in real-time.”
