Iraq’s State of Law Alliance expresses support for Syrian people’s demands for democracy

BAGHDAD / IraqiNews.com: The Legislature in Iraq‘s State of Law Alliance, led by Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, Yassin Majid, has said on Thursday that his “Alliance had been following up the current developments in the Arab Region and what some Arab regimes have been confronting, reiterating that his “State of Law Alliance supports the ambitions of the Syrian people for freedom, justice, democracy,and against the Single Party experience, along with the use of violence against protesters.” “The State of Law Alliance is following up the current transformations in some Arab regimes and the political transformations on the Arab Arena, looking with great anxiety towards what is taking place in Syria, such anxiety that pushes us to take clear, transparent and independent positions towards those developments,” Majid told a press conference, held in the Parliament and attended by IraqiNews.com news agency. “Our positions are stemming from two basic issues, the first is independence in taking decisions and attitudes towards what is taking place in the Arab Region and on the International Arena and the second is balancing in taking positions,” Majid said, adding that “the State of Law’s position stems from its understanding that a ‘great and serious problem, from which the Iraqi political arena is related tot he state of independence and balancing in taking decisions.” He said: “We, in the State of Law, support the ambitions of the Syrian people towards freedom, justice and democracy and the peaceful exchange of power, along with free elections; and against the experience of the One Party, that we suffered from for a long time in Iraq,and against the so-called ‘One Leader,’ and against the use of violence to achieve those goals, refusing violence, used against protesters.” Majid reaffirmed that “the position of the State of Law is linked with the interest of the Iraqi people and their national security,” confirming that “such vision is stemmed from our feeling that Iraq shall be the first state that will be harmed from any passive incident in Syria, and we think that our vision and positions stem from the National Interest and the National Security of Iraq.” Noteworthy is that Iraq had refused to vote on the Arab League’s decision to freeze Syria‘s membership in the League, in counter to the positions of other Arab states, and Iraq‘s Foreign Minister, Hoshiar Zibary, had announced that Iraq‘s refusal to vote on the decision, had been an independent position that confirmed Baghdad’s non-alliance towards any axis.
