Baghdad (Iraqinews.com) Iraqi Vice President Nouri al-Maliki has congratulated the Iraqi people on the great victory over Islamic State.

“Defeating terrorism in Iraq will have a positive impact on other fronts in Syria, Lebanon, Yemen, Egypt and the whole world,” Maliki was quoted by Altaghier TV as saying in a statement on Sunday.

In his statement, Maliki praised the role played by Iraqi security forces and other friendly countries to defeat terrorism in Iraq, stressing that it is the time now to start reconstructing Iraq and bringing the displaced people back to their home regions.

Maliki also stressed the need for achieving political consensus in the country, providing support for the martyrs’ families and improving the quality of services provided for the Iraqi people, who, according to Maliki, succeeded in foiling plots of Iraq’s enemies.

On Saturday, the Iraqi government has announced full liberation of borders with Syria from Islamic State militants.

In a speech during the international media conference held at the journalists syndicate in Baghdad, Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi said, “Our troops gained full control on the Iraqi-Syrian borders. We announce the end of war against Islamic State.”

“Our battle against the enemy, who wanted to destroy our civilization, has ended. However, we gained victory through our unity and determination that made us defeat IS in short time,” he said.
