Salih urges more UN support for Iraq, end to regional tensions
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Iraqi President Barham Salih has urged the United Nations to provide more support for Iraq and work on reducing tensions in the Middle East region.
The president made the remarks during a meeting at the As Salam palace in Baghdad with Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, the Iraqi presidency said in a press statement.
Salih praised a role played by the UN body in support of the democratic process in the country, urging more efforts to relieve regional tensions.
“The Iraqi people are looking forward to a new phase characterized by security, stability and development,” he added.
The UN official, for her part, reiterated the UN’s support for Iraq in different fields, pledging to continue providing aid for Iraq and to secure a safe return of the displaced families to their homes.
