URGENT: Germany to arm 4,000 Kurdish fighters against ISIS
(IraqiNews.com) On Monday, the German Defense Ministry confirmed that it will send a shipment of weapons to Kurdistan Region which is sufficient to equip a brigade of 4,000 troops, while indicating that such assistance is necessary for the Kurdish Peshmerga fighters, who are engaged in a confrontation with the militants of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, warning that “the security of Europe is under threat”.
The Reuters news agency quoted from the German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen as saying in a press statement that “Germany will send sufficient weapons to arm 4,000 Kurdish fighters in northern Iraq. These fighters are engaged in a confrontation with the militants of ISIS who threatens to destabilize the Middle East,” indicating that “the shipment includes armor-piercing weapons, anti-tank missiles, thousands of assault rifles, grenades, mine clearance equipment, night vision binoculars, tents and field kitchens.”
