2 policemen killed in Mosul checkpoint attack

NINEWA, Sept. 20 (Iraqi News) – Two policemen were killed when unidentified gunmen attacked a checkpoint in central Mosul on Saturday, a security source in Ninewa province said. “The gunmen killed two police personnel at a checkpoint in al-Faruq area, central Mosul, and escaped to an unknown place,” the source, who requested anonymity, told IraqiNews.com – Voices of Iraq – (Iraqi News). “The two bodies were removed to the al-Jumhuri hospital mortuary in western Mosul,” the source said, not giving more details about the incident. Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa, lies 405 km north of Baghdad. The original city of Mosul stands on the west bank of the Tigris River, opposite the ancient biblical city of Nineveh on the east bank, but the metropolitan area has now grown to encompass substantial areas on both banks, with five bridges linking the two sides. Despite having an amount of Kurdish population, it does not form part of the area controlled by the Kurdistan Regional Government Kurdistan RegionG).
