26 mortars seized in Amara
MISSAN / IraqiNews.com: Army forces seized 26 mortars and large amounts of ammunition in eastern Amara city, a senior security source said on Saturday. “Today, forces from the Iraqi army’s 10th Division found different types of mortars, 10 anti-armor rockets, two Katyusha launching pads, 23 cannon balls, SPJ 9 cannon, 13 bags of gunpowder…,” Staff. Maj. Gen. Nabil Yaseen al-Zibdi told IraqiNews.com. Since June 19, 2008, Iraqi security forces have been conducting a wide-scale security operation, codenamed Bashaer al-Salam (Promises of Peace) in Missan province with the aim of tracking down armed groups and outlaws. Missan is a Shiite province. Its capital city is al-Amara. Sitting on the Tigris River, Amara lies 390 km south of Baghdad. Missan, in the east of the country, bordering Iran, is home to many marsh Arabs. SS (P) 1
