54 corpses found in Mosul, Anbar: security and paramilitary sources
Mosul/ Hit (IraqiNews.com) The bodies of 54 people executed by Islamic State militants and killed in battles between the group and Iraqi forces were discovered on Wednesday in Mosul and Anbar, according to security and paramilitary sources.
Shafaq News quoted a source at the Civil Defense service saying that 14 dead bodies of people apparently killed in encounters between IS and security troops were found under the rubbles in Mahallat al-Maydan and Qleyat districts in the Old City, Mosul.
In Hit, west of Anbar, Qatari al-Obaidi, a senior commander at Anbar’s mobilization forces, told IkhNews that the bodies of 40 people executed by IS were found inside a mass grave in the city of Hit, west of Ramadi.
He said the corpses, found during a security search at al-Gamiya neighborhood, belonged to civilians from Albu Nemr, a local clan.
As Iraqi troops recaptured areas held by Islamic State militants since October 2016, they have regularly run into mass graves of civilians and security agents executed by militants for fleeing the group’s havens or collaborating with security forces.
Iraq’s war against the Islamic State displaced at least five million civilians and left thousands dead. The United Nations accuses IS of committing deeds that mount to war crimes.
Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has recently declared “military victory” over IS as all of the group’s bastions were recaptured by November 17th.
