Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) One person was killed while five others were injured in two bomb blasts in Baghdad on Sunday, a security source told Baghdad Today website.

“A bomb exploded at al-Tarmiyah area north of Baghdad, targeting a car with three al-Hashd al-Shaabi fighters inside,” the source said, adding that one of them was killed, while the two others were injured.

“Another bomb detonated near a shop in an industrial area east of Baghdad, injuring three persons,” the source pointed out.

Earlier in the day, Iraqi troops arrested a man wearing an explosive belt north of Baghdad.

In a statement, the Baghdad Operations Command said the terrorist was nabbed at al-Tarmiyah area with an explosive belt, a bomb and a gun in his possession.

Violence in the country has surged further with the emergence of Islamic State Sunni extremist militants who proclaimed an “Islamic Caliphate” in Iraq and Syria in 2014.

The surge in violence between armed groups and government forces has resulted in over 3 million internally displaced persons across Iraq and left more than 11 million in need of humanitarian assistance, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

The Iraqi capital has seen almost daily bombings and armed attacks against security members, paramilitary troops and civilians since a government campaign, backed by al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces) and a U.S.-led international coalition, has been fighting the Islamic State group, which declared a self-styled “caliphate” from Mosul in June 2014.
