Bomb attack kills Iraqi driver, wounds two municipal workers in Baiji
Salahuddin (IraqiNews.com) – An Iraqi man was killed and two others were injured Saturday in a bomb blast in Salahuddin’s oil rich district of Baiji, a police chief was quoted as saying.
Baiji police chief Ali Alhamdani told the National Iraqi News Agency (NINA) that the bomb blast targeted a truck in Baiji, north of Tikrit, leaving the driver dead and two municipal workers wounded.
The bomb is believed to be planted by the defeated Islamic State terrorist group, he said, pointing out that there are many other bombs in the district, which threaten the lives of residents.
Violence in the country has surged further with the emergence of Islamic State extremist militants who proclaimed an “Islamic Caliphate” in Iraq and Syria in 2014.
The surge in violence between armed groups and government forces has resulted in over five million internally displaced persons across Iraq and left more than 11 million in need of humanitarian assistance, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
