Bomb explosion wounds two paramilitary fighters in Iraq
Diyala (IraqiNews.com) – Two Iraqi paramilitary fighters were wounded Wednesday in a bomb attack in Diyala province, a security source was quoted as saying.
“A bomb explosion targeted a patrol of the paramilitary Popular Mobilization Forces on the outskirts of Miqdadiyah in northeastern Diyala,” the source told Mawazin News.
“The explosion left two PMF members wounded,” the source said, adding that ambulances carried the pair into a nearby hospital for treatment.
No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Islamic State (IS) militant group, in most cases, is responsible for attacks targeting crowded areas, including markets, cafes and mosques across Iraq.
Iraq declared the collapse of Islamic State’s territorial influence in November 2017 with the recapture of Rawa, a city on Anbar’s western borders with Syria, which was the group’s last bastion in Iraq.
IS declared a self-styled “caliphate” in a third of Iraq and neighboring Syria in 2014. A government campaign, backed by a U.S.-led international coalition and paramilitary forces, was launched in 2016 to retake IS-held regions, managing to retake all havens, most notably the city of Mosul, the group’s previously proclaimed capital.
