Car bomb attack kills five Iraqis, wounds 16 others in Tikrit
Salahuddin (IraqiNews.com) – As many as 21 people were killed and wounded Sunday in a car bomb attack in Tirkit, the capital city of the Iraqi province of Salahuddin, the Security Media Center was quoted as saying.
“The terrorist car bomb attack, which took place at al-Atebaa street in Tikrit, left five Iraqi civilians dead and 16 others wounded,” Al Ekhbariya TV channel quoted the center as saying.
A security source also said that 12 vehicles were destroyed as a result of the bomb attack.
According to the source, the security forces rushed to the blast site and carried the victims to the forensic medicine department, while the wounded were moved to a nearby hospital for treatment.
No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Islamic State (IS) militant group, in most cases, is responsible for attacks targeting crowded areas, including markets, cafes and mosques across Iraq.
Violence in the country has surged further with the emergence of Islamic State extremist militants who proclaimed an “Islamic Caliphate” in Iraq and Syria in 2014.
The surge in violence between armed groups and government forces has resulted in over five million internally displaced persons across Iraq and left more than 11 million in need of humanitarian assistance, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
